Buying My First Scroll Saw: A Journey into Creativity

I always dreamed of owning a scroll saw, convinced that these machines were some of the most amazing tools out there. Turns out—I was right! The versatility and forgiving nature of a scroll saw make it an absolute joy to work with.

For years, I heard about the Excalibur Scroll Saw and knew it was my dream machine. But at the time, I couldn’t afford one. So, I decided to start with a Wen Scroll Saw—a more budget-friendly option at just over $100. It had great reviews, and I figured it was the perfect way to test the waters.

Life got busy, and the Wen saw sat in its box for months before I finally set it up. I turned it on and realized—I had no idea how to use it! Luckily, YouTube came to the rescue. After watching tutorials, I pushed past the intimidation and gave it a shot. Halloween was around the corner, so I started with ghosts and bats cut from 1-inch wood—and instantly, I fell in love with this machine.

Over time, I learned a lot about scrolling and about myself. A scroll saw is incredibly multi-functional—whether crafting small, intricate pieces or working on bulkier designs, it offers endless possibilities. It does take practice, but it’s surprisingly easy to learn. I’ve created decorations for Halloween, Christmas, Easter, and anything else that sparks creativity!

After about a year of working with the Wen scroll saw—and saving up—I finally purchased the Excalibur Scroll Saw, and WOW!

If you're thinking about getting into scroll sawing but feel unsure about the cost or the learning curve, I highly recommend starting with the Wen Scroll Saw. It’s still priced at just over $100, and in my experience, Wen makes quality tools that don’t disappoint.

Whether you're just starting out or looking for a new creative outlet, scroll sawing might be just the thing for you!

This is the saw that I bought. However, I heard they went out of business and another company took over. Not sure.

I hear that the Pegas is very good machine. Just do your research. There are a lot of good machines out there
